WASHINGTON: US Heat Wave conditions disrupted Fourth of July celebrations across large parts of the United States on Friday, forcing officials to cancel or postpone parades, concerts and fireworks as dangerous temperatures spread across the country.

Extreme heat affected communities from the Midwest to the East Coast. More than 185 million people, or over half of the US population, remained under heat alerts as temperatures and humidity reached hazardous levels.

One of the biggest disruptions occurred in Washington, where officials temporarily closed the Great American State Fair on the National Mall after temperatures climbed to 38°C. The event forms part of President Donald Trump’s programme to mark the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

Later, organisers cancelled the National Park Service’s Independence Day Parade because of safety concerns. Weather forecasts warned that the heat index could reach 115°F (46°C) during the event.

Meteorologists said a powerful heat dome trapped hot air over much of the country. As a result, humidity increased and temperatures reached record highs in several cities.

Meanwhile, the extreme weather placed additional pressure on electricity networks. PJM, the largest US power grid operator, asked customers in emergency conservation programmes to reduce electricity use after high demand and equipment failures threatened the system.

In New York, utility company Con Edison reported that about 17,000 customers lost power on Friday. The company also urged residents of New York City and Westchester County to conserve electricity as air-conditioning demand surged.

The heat also affected daily life across New York City. In some areas of Manhattan, high temperatures softened road adhesives, causing shoe soles to stick to the pavement. Despite the conditions, large crowds gathered outside Madison Square Garden for the widely anticipated wedding celebration of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.

Health officials warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat could become life-threatening. Therefore, they advised people attending outdoor events to drink plenty of water, seek shade and recognise the signs of heat-related illness.

Furthermore, cities across the Eastern Seaboard cancelled or delayed Independence Day events. Philadelphia cancelled its Salute to Independence Parade after temperatures reached 103°F, matching a record first set in 1901.

Haddon Township in New Jersey also cancelled its annual July 4 parade. In addition, Watertown, New York, called off its Independence Day concert and fireworks display. Boston officials delayed public access to the city’s annual riverside fireworks celebration by four hours to reduce the health risks associated with the intense heat.

Forecasters expect dangerous temperatures to continue across several regions, with authorities urging the public to follow safety guidance throughout the holiday weekend.
