Remgro has completed a $947 million deal to take full ownership of private healthcare giant Mediclinic, strengthening billionaire Johann Rupert’s investment portfolio and expanding the company’s presence in Southern Africa.
The transaction closed on July 1 after securing all required regulatory approvals. As a result, Remgro now owns 100% of Mediclinic, ending its long-standing joint ownership with Luxembourg-based Investment Holding Limited (IHL).
The acquisition marks a significant milestone for Remgro, one of South Africa’s leading investment companies. It also reinforces the influence of Johann Rupert, Africa’s second-richest billionaire, in the healthcare sector.

Before the deal, Remgro shared ownership of Mediclinic with IHL under a joint investment structure. However, the latest transaction gives the company complete control over one of Southern Africa’s largest private hospital networks.

Mediclinic operates an extensive network of hospitals and healthcare facilities across Southern Africa and several international markets. The company remains one of the region’s largest private healthcare providers.
The acquisition follows regulatory approval from the relevant authorities, allowing the transaction to become effective on July 1.
With the deal now complete, Remgro is expected to focus on expanding Mediclinic’s operations while improving healthcare services and operational efficiency across its network.
