Karachi: The principal of Dow Medical College, Professor Saba Sohail, stated that X-ray has not been so effective in diagnosing diseases other than fractures. Due to the innovation and development of MRI, CT scan, PET and HRCT scan in the field of radiology, valuable lives can be saved by getting important information regarding a disease in a very short time. She said while addressing to the seminar themed on ā€œSecrets of Radiology for Head and Neck Surgeryā€ that timely diagnosis and examination are very important to detect cancer in the head and neck in particular. The seminar was organized by Dow University of Health Sciences in collaboration with ENT-Head and Neck Department Dr. Ruth K.M. Principal DOW Medical College Prof Saba Sohail was the chief guest of the event while other guests Prof Salman Matiullah, Prof Iqbal Hussain Udaipurwala, Dr Fahad Haroon, Dr Raheela Usman, Dr Shayan Sirat, Dr Rehana Sheikh and Dr Vicky Kumar also addressed the seminar. In her speech, Prof. Saba Sohail urged the residents to investigate as many radiological cases as they could in order to broaden their knowledge and expertise. The session was held in 78’-OT Complex Civil Hospital. The seminar’s major goal was to inform postgraduate trainees in ENT and radiology about significant issues. Faculty and residents from other institutions also attended the seminar.

Speakers said that better communication between radiologists and surgeons plays a key role in diagnosing and treating diseases. Dr Shayan Sirat said that PET scan is effective in diagnosing carcinoma or other diseases. But this is an expensive scan and some hospitals have the facility, due to which people are prescribed CT scans. The speakers provided detailed explanations on ways and new techniques to overcome the extraordinary challenges faced in diagnostic radiology. Prof Iqbal Hussain Udaipurwala said that radiology plays the role of back bone in the field of medicine.  A question and answer session was also organized in the seminar in which prizes were given to the residents who gave correct answers.
