Pakistan Taking Additional Responsibility Under Makkah Agreement Asim Iftikhar

Foreign Secretary Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said Pakistan is taking additional responsibility under the Makkah Agreement as tensions in the Middle East continue to worsen.

Speaking in New York, Asim Iftikhar said Pakistan was supporting efforts to end the conflict. Meanwhile, Islamabad is seeking a peaceful solution based on international law and United Nations principles.

Pakistan Calls for Ceasefire and Dialogue

The foreign secretary said Pakistan wants an immediate ceasefire and a reduction in tensions. Furthermore, he called for the parties to return to the negotiating table.

He also referred to the UN Security Council Charter. According to Asim Iftikhar, the charter calls for disputes to be resolved through dialogue rather than war.

At the same time, he said Pakistan recognises the worsening regional situation and understands the need to play a constructive role.

“We recognise that the situation is moving in a negative direction, and we understand that we have to play a role,” he said.

Pakistan Steps Up Diplomatic Role

Asim Iftikhar said Pakistan, along with the other countries involved, is part of the Makkah Agreement. Therefore, Islamabad is taking on additional responsibility under the accord.

He said Pakistan’s main objective remains peace and stability in the region. Moreover, the country has closely followed developments linked to the Iran-US conflict.

Pakistan has also been among the countries involved in diplomatic efforts concerning the conflict. As a result, Islamabad continues to advocate dialogue and de-escalation.

Palestine and Kashmir

The foreign secretary also addressed the conflicts in Palestine and Kashmir. He said both issues should be resolved in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

In addition, Asim Iftikhar rejected the view that the United Nations has no role in promoting peace. He stressed the importance of international institutions and established legal frameworks in resolving conflicts.

Islamabad Pushes for De-escalation

Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts come as regional tensions remain high. For now, Islamabad is seeking to balance its commitments under the Makkah Agreement with its broader push for dialogue.

Overall, Asim Iftikhar said Pakistan would continue supporting efforts aimed at reducing tensions and finding peaceful solutions to regional conflicts.
