Manchester United Begin Champions League Campaign with 4-0 Win

Manchester United made a winning return to the Champions League with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Azerbaijani champions Sabah at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez all found the net as United took full advantage of a favourable opening fixture.

Cunha Breaks the Deadlock

United controlled much of the early action before breaking through in the 27th minute.

Patrick Dorgu impressed in the absence of Luke Shaw. He delivered a dangerous cross from the left, and Cunha met it at the near post to put United ahead.

The goal gave the hosts greater control after a difficult start to their domestic campaign.

United had collected only four points from their opening three Premier League matches.

Fernandes and Sesko Strike Before Half-Time

United quickly turned their advantage into a commanding lead.

Fernandes combined with Youri Tielemans before producing a composed finish. The goal was his fourth in two home appearances this season.

Three minutes later, Bryan Mbeumo sent Sesko through on goal.

The striker rounded Sabah goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov and rolled the ball into an empty net. It was Sesko’s first goal of the season.

Martinez Completes Comfortable Win

United maintained control after the break and continued to threaten.

The fourth goal came after a mistake from Pokatilov. Joshua Zirkzee’s backheel was blocked, but the loose ball fell near the goalkeeper.

Martinez reacted quickly and finished into an empty net.

Manager Michael Carrick then made several changes during the second half. He had Sunday’s Manchester derby against Manchester City in mind and rested several key players.

Sabah Unable to Match United

Sabah had earned their place in the Champions League after navigating four qualifying rounds.

The Azerbaijani champions were therefore making a historic European appearance. However, United’s greater quality proved decisive at Old Trafford.

The victory gives United an ideal start to their Champions League campaign.

Their next European test will come away to Atletico Madrid in five weeks.
