The Islamabad High Court has ruled that displaying “Advocate” on vehicle number plates is illegal. Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri announced this decision during a lawyers’ ceremony, stressing that all citizens, including lawyers, must abide by legal regulations.
He emphasized that using such titles on number plates creates an unjustified impression of special privilege, which contradicts the principle of equality before the law. Lawyers have been instructed to remove these markings and avoid using their profession for personal benefits.
The court warned that strict action could be taken against those who violate this rule. In Pakistan, vehicle registration laws do not permit special number plates with titles like “Advocate” or “Doctor.” The standardized plates, issued by the Excise and Taxation Department, ensure uniformity, prevent misuse of professional designations, and aid law enforcement in vehicle identification.
The ruling reinforces that no individual or profession is above the law, and all drivers must adhere to standard traffic regulations.
