UN Secretary-General António Guterres meets Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at GHQ Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI, October 7: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.

The meeting covered matters of mutual interest, the regional security environment and the United Nations’ role in promoting international peace and security. Guterres was in Pakistan for an official visit on October 6–7, according to the UN.

The two sides exchanged views on regional stability, the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, Pakistan’s concerns over India’s abeyance of the Indus Waters Treaty, and terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.

Field Marshal Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international peace and highlighted the country’s contributions to United Nations peacekeeping missions.

He also appreciated the UN’s role under Secretary-General Guterres in promoting peace, stability and humanitarian cooperation.

Guterres Recognises Pakistan’s UN Peacekeeping Role

The UN Secretary-General paid tribute to the sacrifices and contributions of Pakistan and its armed forces in the fight against terrorism and in UN peacekeeping missions.

Guterres also acknowledged Pakistan’s continued commitment to international peace and security and appreciated its efforts towards the peaceful resolution of regional conflicts.

 

The meeting came during Guterres’ official visit to Pakistan, where he also held talks with senior Pakistani officials on regional and international issues. The UN said he had discussed Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue in the US-Iran conflict and called for a return to diplomacy.
