Eight Wounded in Shooting Outside High School in Western Türkiye

A gunman opened fire outside a high school in western Türkiye on Tuesday, wounding eight people before police detained the suspected attacker, local officials said.

The shooting occurred at around 8am in Turgutlu, a district in Manisa province near the western city of Izmir. The Manisa governor’s office said it received a report of gunfire near Inci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School at 7:59am.

Local media reported that students were among those injured. NTV reported that two of the wounded were in critical condition. Authorities have opened an investigation into the incident.

Police Detain Suspected Gunman

CCTV footage broadcast by Turkish media appeared to show a young man carrying what looked like a rifle near the school.

Other footage from the area showed police officers wrestling a man to the ground before taking him away.

Police and emergency responders were quickly deployed to the scene. The governor’s office confirmed that the suspected attacker had been caught and taken into custody.

Authorities have not immediately disclosed a motive for the shooting.

Previous School Attacks

The latest incident comes months after two school shootings in Türkiye that raised concerns about school security.

In April, a shooting at a school in Kahramanmaras killed a teacher and nine students. The attacker, an eighth-grade student, also died during the incident. Turkish authorities later launched legal proceedings involving the suspect’s parents.

A day earlier, another teenager opened fire at a former high school in Sanliurfa province. The attack wounded 16 people before the suspect died after confronting police, according to reports.

The incidents prompted renewed debate over school security and access to firearms.

New School Security Measures

Tuesday’s shooting occurred one day after Education Minister Yusuf Tekin and Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci signed a protocol outlining security measures for the 2026-27 academic year.

The academic year began on September 14.

Ciftci previously said authorities had strengthened security at schools following the April attacks. The government has also introduced additional measures to improve security around educational institutions.

Under the new measures, 31,000 school grounds supervisors were deployed for the first time, according to the supplied report.

Police officers have also been assigned to schools considered to face higher security risks. Officers are expected to remain on permanent duty at first- and second-degree risk schools.

Lower-risk schools will have police liaison officers working with school administrations.

Police teams responsible for public order, narcotics and juvenile issues will also conduct regular patrols around schools.

Authorities will additionally inspect school buses and assess abandoned buildings near educational institutions.
