Dr Najeeb Naqi Elected AJK President with 32 Votes
Dr Muhammad Najeeb Naqi elected president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) nominee Dr Muhammad Najeeb Naqi has been elected president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) for a five-year term.
Dr Najeeb Naqi secured 32 votes in the presidential election held at the AJK Legislative Assembly on Thursday. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Chaudhry Latif Akbar received 13 votes.
The newly elected president will become the 23rd president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. A candidate needed at least 27 votes to win the election.
Polling took place at the AJK Legislative Assembly in Muzaffarabad from 10am to 1pm. Officials then counted the votes.
The election filled the constitutional office that had remained vacant since January. Former AJK president Barrister Sultan Mahmood died earlier this year.
Chaudhry Latif Akbar initially served as acting president after Sultan Mahmood’s death. Chaudhry Tariq Farooq later assumed the role after his election as speaker of the Legislative Assembly on August 25.

PML-N nominated Dr Najeeb Naqi for the presidency, while the PPP fielded Chaudhry Latif Akbar. Both candidates submitted their nomination papers on September 19. Officials declared both nominations valid after scrutiny.
The AJK Legislative Assembly has 46 occupied seats. The PML-N and its allied member hold 32 seats, while the PPP has 14 members.
Dr Najeeb Naqi belongs to Sudhnoti district of AJK. He previously served as health minister in the PML-N government from 2016 to 2021.
His election completes the process of filling the AJK presidency after the office remained vacant for nearly eight months.
