KARACHI: Police have arrested businessman Salman Farooqi for allegedly assaulting a young motorcyclist in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area. The incident gained widespread attention after a video of the altercation—showing Farooqi attacking the motorcyclist in front of his sister—circulated widely on social media, sparking public outrage.
According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Asad Raza, Farooqi was apprehended after a thorough technical investigation. Raids were also carried out at his home and office during the probe.
A case has been registered at the Gizri Police Station on charges including physical assault, issuing death threats, and public humiliation, based on a complaint filed by an eyewitness, Muhammad Saleem.
Saleem, who works as a sales manager for a mobile company, said he was at Ittehad Commercial in DHA for official work when a minor accident occurred involving a motorcyclist and women riding with him. Farooqi, who was in a car, reportedly became aggressive and attacked the motorcyclist.
The complainant further alleged that Farooqi, with help from a security guard, forcefully held the biker inside the car at gunpoint and subjected him to verbal and physical abuse, despite repeated appeals from the women present. Farooqi allegedly pushed the women aside and continued his assault.
Several eyewitnesses recorded the incident and later uploaded the videos online. Authorities are currently working to locate the motorcyclist and his family to aid in the ongoing investigation.
