The Sindh government has unveiled two major initiatives: a free housing project for 2022 flood victims and an annual distribution of pink electric scooters (EV bikes) for women, ARY News reported.
Sindh Information and Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, during a press conference, emphasized the PPP-led government’s commitment to women empowerment and green transportation. The housing scheme will deliver 2.1 million homes, with ownership registered under women’s names to reinforce gender empowerment. This follows the devastation of the 2022 floods, which destroyed around 2.1 million houses. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has pledged to fulfill this promise to the affected families.
Simultaneously, the Pink EV Scooty initiative will see electric scooters distributed to women every year. So far, over 8,000 women have applied, and 1,000 scooters will be distributed next month in the first phase, selected through a lottery system.
To support this, training centers will be set up in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Nawabshah, Benazirabad, and Mirpurkhas, offering free training on scooter use and maintenance for mothers, daughters, and working women.
The initiative aims to promote safe, economical, and eco-friendly transportation for women and will eventually create employment opportunities through the electric taxi project, scheduled to launch in June 2025.
