Atletico Madrid Strengthen Top-Four Position
BARCELONA: Atletico Madrid strengthened their fourth-place position in La Liga after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Osasuna on Tuesday.
First, English forward Ademola Lookman opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 15th minute. The penalty was awarded after a handball by Javi Galan.
Later, Alexander Sorloth doubled Atletico’s lead with a close-range header. As a result, Atletico looked fully in control of the match.
However, the game became tense after Marcos Llorente received a red card for two reckless fouls.
Meanwhile, Kike Barja scored during injury time for Osasuna. Nevertheless, Atletico managed to protect their lead until the final whistle.
Atletico Stay Behind League Leaders
Following the victory, Atletico Madrid moved to 66 points in the standings.
However, they still trail league champions FC Barcelona, who lead with 91 points.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid CF remain second with 77 points, while Villarreal CF hold third place with 69 points.
Importantly, all three clubs still have one game in hand.

Because of the win, Betis guaranteed at least a fifth-place finish in La Liga.

Therefore, Betis will return to Europe’s top club competition for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

After the match, manager Manuel Pellegrini praised his players for their determination throughout the season.
According to Pellegrini, the club targeted Champions League qualification from the very beginning of the campaign.
Furthermore, he said the team always responded strongly after disappointing results.
He also thanked the supporters for standing behind the club during difficult moments.

Elsewhere, Levante UD climbed out of the relegation zone after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Celta Vigo.
As a result, the relegation battle became even tighter.
Currently, several clubs remain locked on 39 points, including Elche and RCD Espanyol.

Next, Real Betis will face Barcelona on Sunday in another major La Liga fixture.
Meanwhile, football analysts believe Betis’ qualification reflects the club’s steady progress under Manuel Pellegrini in recent years.
