Karachi : The Advanced Studies and Research Board (BASR) of the University of Karachi (UoK) has awarded a higher doctorate, Doctor of Science (DSc), to Prof Dr Syed Ghulam Musharraf in recognition of his extensive contributions to chemical sciences.
The International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) spokesman highlighted that Prof Musharraf is among the few professors at the university to receive this honor at a relatively young age. Prof Musharraf, affiliated with the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, is renowned in Pakistan for his expertise in mass spectrometry. His pioneering efforts have led to the establishment of a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry research laboratory in Pakistan. Furthermore, his significant work in biomarker research using metabolomics and proteomics approaches has garnered international acclaim. He has established a robust global network with clinicians to tackle human health issues, notably cancer and ?-thalassemia.
Prof Musharraf’s academic credentials are impressive, with over 260 publications in peer-reviewed journals, an h-index of 38, and a cumulative journal impact factor exceeding 1100. He has contributed to several book chapters, reviews, and edited books, and holds US patents. His accolades include the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, the Pakistan Academy of Sciences Gold Medal Award in Chemical Sciences, and Fellowship of the Chemical Society of Pakistan. Prof Musharraf has directly and indirectly supervised 40 Ph.D. students and has mentored numerous HEC Indigenous Ph.D. scholars. He has secured competitive grants from esteemed international and national funding agencies, including the Higher Education Commission (HEC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), and National ICT R&D.
The ICCBS Director, Prof Dr Farzana Shaheen, lauded Prof Musharraf for his outstanding achievement. Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Prof Dr Khalid Iraqi, and Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, Professor Emeritus and former Federal Minister for Science and Technology, extended their congratulations to Prof Musharraf for this distinguished honor.
