The Sindh government has announced that double-decker buses will start running in Karachi from next month, as part of efforts to improve urban transport, ARY News reported. According to Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Memon, this move complements several initiatives already in place, including the Peoples Bus Service and the Pink Bus project.
In addition, Memon revealed plans to launch a Pink Taxi service exclusively for women, expanding gender-sensitive transport options in the city.
Meanwhile, the Pink EV Scooty Scheme—an electric two-wheeler initiative for women—has also been launched. Spearheaded by the Transport and Mass Transit Department, the project aims to empower female students and working women by providing them with free electric scooters.
Eligibility requirements for the scheme include:
- Permanent residency in Sindh
- Status as a student or working woman
- A valid motorbike or car driving license
- A commitment not to sell or sublet the scooty for 7 years
Distribution Process:
- Selection via a transparent balloting process
- Oversight by a committee including officials from the Excise, Transport, and Finance Departments, alongside media representatives
- Road safety skill tests will also be mandatory for shortlisted candidates
These initiatives are part of the Sindh government’s broader efforts to promote safe, accessible, and women-focused public transport across the province.
