Karachi, May 30th 2025: Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat met under the chairmanship of Senator Rana Mehmood ul Hassan, recieved a briefing on Shaikh Sultan Trust at Karachi on 30th May 2025.
The Committee sought a comprehensive briefing on the Sheikh Sultan Trust and was perturbed to note that the last meeting of the Board of Trustees of Sheikh Sultan Trust was held in 2003 and expressed displeasure on abysmal disbursement of donations.
The Committee was briefed by the Additional Secretary, Cabinet Division and was informed that it is a charitable organization established under registered trust deed dated 9-8-1974. The name of the institution was changed from the Peoples Foundation to Sheikh Sultan Trust under Presidential Order No.4 of 1978. At first it was working under the administrative control of the Ministry of Education however since October 2004, it is under the control and supervision of the Cabinet Division.
The Board of Trustees notified in 2000 is headed by the ministry for finance. The Committee recommended that members from the Parliament should also be made part of the Board of Trust.
The Sheikh Sultan Trust has 22 defense saving certificates worth Rs.681, 127,000. The Sheikh Sultan Trust has a sanctioned strength of 49 out of which 27 are filled.
The Committee recommended that details of all rental agreements indicating tenants, year wise rent, duration of contracts to be submitted.
The Committee decided to constitute a Sub-Commmittee to identify the problems hindering functioning of Sheikh Sultan Trust to meet its objectives under convenership of Senator Amir Waliuddin Chisthi.
The meeting was attended by Senator Amir Waliuddin Chisthi , Senator Saifullah Sarwar Khan Nyazee, Additional Secretary Cabinet Division and representatives of SST.
