The US approves a major weapons package to strengthen Saudi Arabia's air defence capabilities.

Saudi Arms Deal moved forward on Wednesday after the US State Department approved the proposed sale of nearly $1.96 billion in weapons to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s air defence capabilities amid escalating tensions across the Middle East.

The State Department said the proposed package supports US foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of Saudi Arabia, which Washington considers a major non-NATO ally and an important contributor to political stability and economic development in the Gulf region.

The package includes up to 20,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) and related warheads. The US Navy describes the system as a cost-effective precision-guided weapon that can destroy targets while reducing collateral damage during combat operations. BAE Systems, based in Nashua, New Jersey, will serve as the principal contractor for the sale.

According to the State Department, the weapons package will strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to deter current and future threats, improve homeland defence, and enhance interoperability with US forces as well as regional and NATO partners.

The approval comes as regional security concerns continue to grow. Saudi Arabia faces renewed tensions with Yemen’s Houthi movement after the group launched missile attacks targeting Abha International Airport earlier this week.

The Houthis said the attack followed a Yemeni government operation at Sanaa International Airport that reportedly diverted a flight carrying a Houthi delegation returning from the funeral of Iran’s assassinated supreme leader. The group blamed Saudi Arabia for supporting the operation.

The arms sale also coincides with increasing military confrontation between the United States and Iran. Washington has intensified military operations against Iranian targets and recently reinstated a naval blockade, further raising tensions across the region.

The State Department said the proposed sale would not affect US military readiness and reaffirmed that the package aligns with America’s broader defence and strategic interests in the Middle East.
