KARACHI: The political situation in the city has intensified as the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) have stepped up efforts to move a no-confidence motion against Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, signaling a coordinated push to remove him from office.

A key meeting was held on Tuesday at Idara Noor-i-Haq between senior leaders of both parties to finalize their strategy and assess numbers in the City Council. The PTI delegation was led by Sindh chapter president Haleem Adil Sheikh, while the JI side was represented by Karachi chief Monem Zafar Khan and City Council Opposition Leader Saifuddin Advocate.

During the meeting, both parties agreed in principle to pursue the no-confidence motion, terming the mayoral election controversial and the current administration’s performance unsatisfactory.

Opposition leaders alleged that Karachi’s civic conditions had deteriorated under the current leadership, citing unresolved issues such as water shortages, poor sanitation, and worsening traffic management. They also criticized the performance of municipal bodies including the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.

According to participants, the objective of the move is to improve governance in Karachi and address long-standing urban challenges. Both parties maintained that the city’s problems had reached a critical stage requiring urgent political and administrative action.

The meeting also reviewed numerical strength within the City Council, with both PTI and JI expressing confidence in gaining support from other political groups to secure the required majority for the motion.

Leaders from both sides said contacts with other council members were ongoing and expressed optimism about achieving the necessary backing in the coming days.

If successful, the move could mark a significant shift in Karachi’s municipal political landscape amid rising tensions between the city’s major political stakeholders.
