The Government of Pakistan has issued a notification to remove Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema from office.
The notification, signed by Senior Joint Secretary Cabinet Timur Tajmal, said that the Governor of Punjab was removed from office on the advice of the Prime Minister.
According to reports, Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervez Elahi will perform the duties of acting governor.
Earlier, President Arif Alvi had rejected the Prime Minister’s advice to remove the Governor of Punjab.
The President said that the Governor of Punjab could not be removed without the approval of the President. According to Article 101 (3) of the Constitution, the Governor would remain till the consent of the President.
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah had said in a message to President Arif Alvi that the President was bound by the advice of the Prime Minister and deviating from it would be unconstitutional.
