Maryam Nawaz has described the alleged assault on a seven-year-old girl in Sargodha as a heartbreaking incident, saying the government accepts its responsibility but parents must also take greater precautions to protect young children.

Speaking at a meeting of the Paigham-e-Aman Committee in Lahore, the Punjab chief minister said society must also examine how boys and men are being raised, arguing that moral education and responsible parenting are essential to preventing such crimes.

Referring to the Sargodha case, she said the government has a duty to ensure public safety. However, she urged parents not to allow young children to go outside alone, particularly in situations where they may be vulnerable.

Maryam Nawaz said the government cannot monitor what happens inside every home, adding that addressing social problems requires a collective effort from families, communities and state institutions.

She also said she considers every preventable tragedy involving children a personal responsibility. Referring to incidents in which children lose their lives after falling into uncovered drains, she said such events leave her deeply distressed. She added that although authorities install manhole covers, some are later stolen, creating renewed safety risks.

During her address, the chief minister highlighted the role of religious scholars in promoting peace and social harmony. She also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and the deputy prime minister for their efforts in promoting regional stability and supporting diplomatic initiatives during recent tensions involving Iran and the United States.
