India LNG: Government Lifts Emergency Gas Supply Restrictions

Improved LNG shipments from the Middle East have restored normal gas supplies, allowing India to end emergency distribution measures imposed during disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

India LNG supplies have returned to normal after the government lifted emergency restrictions on natural gas distribution following the restoration of liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from the Middle East.

According to official notifications, the emergency measures were introduced in March after tensions in the Strait of Hormuz disrupted LNG transportation, raising concerns over energy security and gas availability.

Under the temporary restrictions, the government reduced natural gas supplies to non-priority sectors to ensure uninterrupted availability for power plants, fertiliser manufacturers, households and other essential services.

Officials said LNG imports from the Middle East have recovered in recent weeks, while shipping conditions along key maritime routes have improved. As a result, natural gas supplies have stabilised, removing the need for emergency distribution controls.

India relies heavily on imported LNG to meet its growing energy demand, with a significant share of its supplies arriving from Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf countries through the Strait of Hormuz.

The government said it will continue to monitor global supply conditions and may introduce administrative measures again if future disruptions affect the energy supply chain. However, authorities confirmed that natural gas distribution is currently operating without restrictions.

The earlier disruption followed heightened tensions during the recent conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, which created uncertainty across global energy markets and raised concerns over the security of one of the world’s most important shipping routes.
