Former prime minister and chairman of the Pakistan Awam Pakistan Party, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, has said that Pakistan cannot achieve lasting economic progress without political and economic stability. He urged policymakers to prioritise exports while reducing imports, arguing that the country’s hardworking people can drive growth if they receive the right support.

Abbasi made the remarks while addressing a ceremony organised by Al-Khair Hajj Group at the residence of Tanneries Association President Danish Aman in Karachi. The event recognised the group’s achievements in the Hajj sector and brought together political leaders, business figures and members of the diplomatic community.

Among those present were former finance minister Miftah Ismail, Balochistan Convener Syed Aman Shah, Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) President Ikram Rajput, Al-Khair Hajj Group CEO Affan Zeeshan, former health minister Dr Zafar Mirza, Karachi party leaders and other guests.

Abbasi congratulated Al-Khair Hajj Group on receiving an award from the Saudi government, describing the recognition as a matter of national pride. He said the honour had enhanced Pakistan’s international reputation, noting that the company was recognised among thousands of Hajj tour operators worldwide.

He said Pakistan’s institutions have the potential to perform far better if they receive proper attention and support. He also stressed the need for strict adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law, arguing that sustainable national development depends on strong governance and institutional stability.

Referring to Pakistan’s economy, Abbasi said overseas Pakistanis continue to play a vital role by sending remittances that support the country’s finances. He also recalled that the government’s Hajj policy during his tenure encouraged strong participation from private pilgrims, which he described as evidence of effective public administration.

Highlighting Karachi’s contribution to the national economy, Abbasi said the city’s residents remain at the forefront of Pakistan’s economic development through their entrepreneurial and commercial activities.

Former finance minister Miftah Ismail questioned the government’s target of increasing exports to $60 billion by 2028, saying current economic conditions make the goal difficult to achieve. He argued that Pakistan has fallen significantly behind India in economic performance despite once being comparatively wealthier.

Ismail said structural reforms are essential for sustainable economic improvement. He added that industrial growth and export expansion would remain difficult while manufacturers continue to face electricity prices of around Rs47 per unit. He also expressed doubt that the country’s existing export targets would be achieved.

KATI President Ikram Rajput said he hoped Shahid Khaqan Abbasi would once again lead the country as prime minister, expressing confidence that his leadership could strengthen Pakistan’s economy and improve living standards.

Al-Khair Hajj Group CEO Affan Zeeshan said he launched the organisation in 1992 and described its recent recognition by the Saudi government as a significant achievement for both the company and Pakistan.
