KARACHI – Congratulations to the good people of Maldives on Foreign Minister H.E. Abdulla Shahid election as President of the Seventy-Sixth Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA76) 2021-22 period in a vote held on June 07,2021 at UNHQ, New York. Foreign Minister His Excellency Abdulla Shahid received 143 votes out of the valid 191 votes. In a secret ballot vote, Abdulla Shahid received 143 ballots in support as 00 nations abstained. It is heartening to have the friendship and support of so many around the world.
First time after 1986 that a South Asian is leading the United Nations General Assembly. A Maldives national has been elected as the President of the United Nations General Assembly for the First time in history. He said that I am thankful to all UN member states, for electing me with an overwhelming majority, as the President of the 76th UN General Assembly. As we mark the 75th anniversary of the UN, I will guide the efforts to contribute to international peace, in the challenging times we live in. He said “I am deeply humbled by the trust and confidence placed in me, and on my country, the Maldives, by this election for the President of UNGA76. Honored to have this opportunity to serve for the betterment of our people, planet and prosperity”
