COLOMBO: India strengthened their position in the second Test against Sri Lanka on Monday after declaring their first innings at 503-9 and reducing the hosts to 8-2 before bad light ended play.
Dhruv Jurel produced the standout performance of the day, scoring an unbeaten 115 to register his second Test century. His composed innings helped India build a commanding lead after the visitors resumed at 300-5.
Sri Lanka now trail by 495 runs with eight wickets remaining in their first innings. Only 56 overs were possible because of rain and poor light at Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.
Jurel Takes India Past 500
Jurel formed a crucial 112-run partnership with Rishabh Pant, who returned to the crease after retiring hurt on the opening day following a blow to his forearm.
Pant responded with an aggressive 63 from 89 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes. One six landed in the adjoining tennis courts and forced the umpires to replace the ball.
Pant eventually fell shortly after lunch while attempting to clear long-off. Jurel then moved closer to his century but endured a tense moment on 99.
He reached three figures with a quick single to mid-off. A direct hit could have run him out, but the ball narrowly missed the stumps. Jurel remained unbeaten on 115 from 177 deliveries, with nine fours and two sixes.

Prasidh Krishna helped India cross the 500-run mark when he drove a full toss from Asitha Fernando to the boundary.
India declared at 503-9 after 138 overs, leaving Sri Lanka with a huge task in their first innings.
Devdutt Padikkal had provided the foundation with 117 on the opening day, while Shubman Gill scored 50 and Ravindra Jadeja added 43.
Fernando was Sri Lanka’s most successful bowler, finishing with 4-106. Prabath Jayasuriya claimed two wickets, while Nuwantha also took two.

Sri Lanka Lose Two Early Wickets
India wasted little time with the ball despite the limited playing time.
Prasidh Krishna removed Lahiru Udara for just one run, with Yashasvi Jaiswal producing an excellent diving catch at third slip.
Sri Lanka sent Prabath Jayasuriya in as a nightwatchman, but Manav Suthar trapped him leg before wicket for two.
The dismissal came from the final delivery of the day as bad light forced the umpires to stop play.
Kamil Mishara remained unbeaten on five, with Sri Lanka ending the day at 8-2.
India Firmly in Command
Sri Lanka paceman Asitha Fernando admitted after play that his team was now behind in the match.
India entered the second Test with a 1-0 lead after winning the opening match in Galle by 165 runs. The latest performance has strengthened their position further, with Sri Lanka facing a massive first-innings deficit when play resumes.
Jurel’s century has emerged as the defining moment of the second day, while India’s late double strike has left Sri Lanka under immediate pressure.
