Zimbabwe claimed first-day honours in the one-off Test against Bangladesh after a disciplined bowling display and a composed batting response left the hosts in a commanding position at the Harare Sports Club.

Left-arm fast bowler Newman Nyamhuri starred with the ball, taking four wickets as Bangladesh collapsed to 140 all out after a promising start.

Zimbabwe then responded strongly through opener Innocent Kaia, whose unbeaten 76 guided the hosts to 136 for one at stumps, leaving them just four runs behind with nine wickets in hand.

Bangladesh arrived in Zimbabwe with confidence following their recent 2–0 Test series victory over Pakistan and with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto carrying strong form into the match.

However, the visitors struggled to convert starts into substantial scores.

After early setbacks, Mominul Haque anchored the innings with a well-made 60, sharing a stabilising partnership that briefly lifted Bangladesh to 113 for three. Shadman Islam contributed 20, while captain Najmul Hossain added 19.

From that point, Zimbabwe’s bowlers took control and dismantled the lower order, with Bangladesh losing their final seven wickets for only 27 runs.

Nyamhuri finished with figures of 4-61, while captain Richard Ngarava claimed 2-18. Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans each collected two wickets to complete a balanced bowling performance.

In reply, Zimbabwe’s innings gathered momentum through an opening stand of 89 runs before Ben Curran departed for 42, caught at second slip off Khaled Ahmed.

Kaia remained composed and continued to accumulate runs, striking nine boundaries during his innings before building an unbroken partnership with experienced batter Brendan Taylor, who closed the day unbeaten on 17.

Zimbabwe will resume on day two in a strong position as they seek another Test victory over Bangladesh after defeating them away from home last year.
