SCOTLAND : Almost everyone now uses the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) and often uses a PIN code to withdraw money from it, but have you ever wondered what PIN stands for? It stands for Personal Identification Number. James Goodfellow, an engineer from Scotland, introduced PIN code technology. In 1966, he filed a patent for the ATM machine and PIN code. Interestingly, along with James Goodfellow, his rival John Shepard Barron is also credited with inventing the ATM machine, but James Goodfellow was the first to file a patent for it, while John Shepard developed a radioactive device to withdraw money from the machine. In contrast, James Goodfellow developed an automated system with an encrypted card and PIN number, which is now being used worldwide.
