WASHINGTON : Recent research has discovered a shocking link between mortality and sleep in the elderly. According to research published in the medical journal JAMA Network Open, unusual changes in daytime sleep patterns, especially excessive napping, may be an early warning sign of death, not just the fatigue of old age, but also in the form of neurological degeneration or deterioration in cardiovascular health. For this study, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital and Rush University Medical Center found that the duration and timing of daytime sleep are directly related to the risk of death. According to the study, the risk of death increased by 13 percent with each additional hour of daytime sleep.
