Washington, April 3, 2026: US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has abruptly forced Army Chief of Staff General Randy George into early retirement during the ongoing war with Iran, in a move described as one of the most significant Pentagon leadership upheavals in decades.

The decision, reported by major US media outlets, also included the removal of General David Hodne and Major General William Green.

General George’s tenure ends just 18 months into what is typically a four-year term. He had been nominated by former US President Joe Biden in 2023 and confirmed by the Senate. His removal comes as US forces enter the fifth week of active operations against Iran.

According to reports, Hegseth is seeking military leadership more closely aligned with the strategic vision of President Donald Trump and his administration. The move reflects growing internal tensions within the Pentagon, with some reports pointing to disagreements over personnel decisions and promotions.

The Pentagon has not officially linked the leadership shake-up to battlefield developments, but analysts warn that abrupt changes during active conflict could disrupt military planning, coordination with allies, and operational readiness.

Acting leadership of the Army will now be assumed by General Christopher LaNeve, a move seen as signaling a shift toward leadership more aligned with the administration’s objectives.

The decision has sparked debate in Washington, with critics warning of potential politicisation of the military during wartime, while supporters argue that leadership alignment could strengthen strategic execution as the conflict with Iran intensifies.
