LONDON — Britain’s King Charles III will undertake a state visit to the United States in late April, Buckingham Palace announced, in a move seen as an effort to help repair strained relations between London and Donald Trump amid tensions over the Iran conflict.

The king, accompanied by Queen Camilla, is scheduled to arrive on April 27 for a visit marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. The trip will include a state banquet at the White House before the royal couple proceeds to Bermuda.

Buckingham Palace said the visit aims to celebrate historic ties and reinforce the modern bilateral relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States. It will be the first US state visit by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II travelled to the country in 2007.

The visit comes at a time of diplomatic strain between Washington and London, largely stemming from the UK government’s cautious stance on the ongoing conflict with Iran. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has faced criticism from Trump for not fully supporting US military actions and initially refusing the use of British bases for offensive operations.

Despite later permitting what London described as defensive strikes, Trump has repeatedly criticised the UK’s position, questioning its commitment to the long-standing alliance.

Analysts say the royal visit reflects an effort by the British government to use the monarchy’s soft power to stabilise relations. Trump has previously expressed admiration for the royal family and maintained cordial ties with King Charles, which officials hope could help ease tensions.

The trip also comes amid broader disagreements, including US criticism of Britain’s foreign policy decisions and disputes over strategic territories such as the Chagos Islands.

While both sides have signaled that the visit will proceed as planned, it places King Charles in a delicate diplomatic position, balancing ceremonial duties with underlying political tensions between the two allies.
