KARACHI, May 19, 2025 – A major step toward green mobility in Pakistan was announced as a Chinese company has committed to installing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Sindh, according to Sindh Information and Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.

The announcement came during a visit to Chery Automobile’s headquarters in Wuhu, China, where Memon was accompanied by Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah.

Charging Points Every 50 Kilometers

Memon revealed that EV charging points will be installed every 50 kilometers in all districts of Sindh, supporting the province’s broader shift toward eco-friendly transportation.

“Our vision is to promote sustainable mobility through electric vehicles,” said Memon. “This initiative will also create employment opportunities for local communities.”

EV Assembly Plant in Karachi

He also disclosed that a mini EV truck assembly plant is being established in Karachi, aiming to make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable for the general public.

Solar Energy Collaboration

Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Shah highlighted broader collaboration with Chinese investors, particularly in solar energy initiatives.

“Solar systems are being distributed to low-income households,” he said. “Household solarization will reduce the burden of high electricity bills and promote energy independence.”

NEPRA Reduces EV Charging Tariff

In a separate but related development, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a significant reduction in the basic EV charging tariff, bringing it down from Rs 45.55 to Rs 23.57 per unit, following a federal government request.

Additionally, NEPRA has also removed the capped profit margin of Rs 24.44 per unit for EV charging stations, a move expected to encourage more private sector investment in the growing EV infrastructure.
