ISLAMABAD: A severe heatwave is tightening its grip across Pakistan, with temperatures forecast to exceed 40°C in multiple regions. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued warnings for escalating heat, particularly across Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan.

According to the Met Office, Dadu is expected to face scorching conditions with temperatures rising to 46°C, while Nawabshah may see highs of 45°C. Sukkur and Hyderabad are also bracing for 43°C.

Karachi will remain hot and humid with a maximum temperature of around 36°C. In southern Punjab, districts like Multan, D.G. Khan, and Sargodha are predicted to hit 40°C, and Lahore is expected to experience around 37°C.

The Met Office noted that a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, beginning April 13, is driving this spell of extreme heat. From April 13 to 18, southern parts of the country may experience temperatures 6 to 8°C above normal, with potential peaks reaching 46–48°C in Sindh.

Central and upper regions including Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan are also likely to experience daytime temperatures 4 to 6°C above average, with warmer nights during the same period.

Authorities have also warned of possible dust and wind storms due to excessive heating.

The general public — especially children, the elderly, and women — is advised to take precautions: stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and minimize outdoor activity during peak hours.
