NDMA Issues Monsoon Advisory for Potential Flooding and Extreme Weather.

Pakistan: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an advisory for potential monsoon rains, wind, and thundershowers expected from July 28 to 31. The advisory warns that monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea will impact the upper regions of Pakistan during this period.

The NDMA has directed all relevant departments to prepare for potential flooding and adverse weather conditions. Under the influence of this weather system, there is a risk of landslides, mudslides, and falling boulders, which could disrupt roads in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galiyat, Murree, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K).

The advisory also highlights the risk of flash flooding in local nullahs and hill torrents, particularly in the Sulaiman and Kirthar Ranges, as well as Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur. The NDMA urges the public to avoid floodwaters and to seek shelter away from flood-prone areas.

Even a small amount of moving water can pose a significant danger, with six inches being enough to knock a person off their feet and one foot of water capable of sweeping away a vehicle. Bridges can become particularly hazardous during floods, and crossing them should be avoided if water flow is rapid.

To keep the public informed, the NDMA has launched the ‘Pak NDMA Disaster Alert’ app, available on both Google Play Store and iOS App Store. This app will provide timely alerts, advisories, and safety guidelines related to the upcoming weather conditions.

The NDMA’s advisory emphasizes the importance of preparedness and caution to minimize risks during anticipated weather events.
