KARACHI: The provincial government of Sindh has sought the help of Pakistan Army, Rangers, and Frontier Corps (FC) in the upcoming month of Muharram to address security issues and the Ministry of Interior has allowed it. This came after the Sindh Home Department formally wrote a letter to increase security measures in the province.

These troops will support the civil authorities in policing during Muharram, a period of mourning observed by Muslims across the world especially the Shia Muslims who are in mourning for the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions, in accordance with Sections 4 & 5 of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.

Echoing this, the interior ministry directive said, “The army is being deployed to support civil administration,” pointing out that the military forces are there to provide support in maintaining law and order during processions and gatherings during the volatile month.

Details of deployment will therefore depend on assessments on the ground, although provincial authorities will be in operational charge of the deployment plan. The Sindh Home Department has been in direct consultation with the military authorities to develop a detailed deployment strategy that is meant to counter security risks and threats in advance.

Most significantly, Muharramul Haram including Youm-e-Ashur on July 17, would demand heightened security throughout the country especially on the routes and areas usually vulnerable during such procession. The previous years have witnessed some unfortunate event of violence in imambargahs and processions thus putting extra security measures this year.

Similarly, the Punjab government’s appeal to temporarily ban the internet and social media to mitigate the spread of hate speech and fake news during Muharram was rejected. However, authorities have continued to invest on enhancing security measures in order to ensure the protection of lives and property as well as the preservation of religious order.

While the Pakistan government and people prepare elaborately for the Muharram, including the performance of significant rites and mourning ceremonies, the stationing of military units in Sindh demonstrates the government’s determination for a safe atmosphere and freedom from tensions and religious clashes during this holy period.
