26th Annual National Neurology Conference Concludes Successfully

KARACHI – Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences, Prof. Mohammad Saeed Quraishy said that there is one neurologist for more than one million people in Pakistan, because at the present moment, the overall number of neurologists is 200. This is although not sufficient but fair enough because, in the 80th decade, there were only two neurologists in Karachi and throughout the province of Sindh. It is very encouraging that the trend of neurology is increasing in Pakistan. He expressed his views while speaking as Chief Guest at 26th National Neurology Conference. The conference was organized by Department of Neurology, Dow University in collaboration with Jinnah Sindh Medical College and Pakistan Society of Neurology.

The conference was addressed by the President of Pakistan Society of Neurology, Prof. Athar Jawed, Chairperson Neurology Conference and the Head Professor of Neurology Department, Dow University of Health Sciences, Prof. Naila Naeem Shehbaz, Co-Chairperson of Neurology Conference and Professor of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical College, Prof. Khalid Sher and other specialists. He added that every year, Neurology Conference is highly appreciated for the promotion of neurology in Pakistan. Through this conference, our new doctors enhance their skills and capabilities of research. The conference has significantly increased the number of neurologists in Pakistan. But even today, it is insufficient as compared to the population here.

The President of Pakistan Society of Neurology, Prof. Athar Jawed said that every year, the purpose of organizing a conference in Pakistan is to bring together the experienced Neurologists, let them know about your experiences and promote Neurology itself. Highlighted his services for neurology as President of Pakistan Society of Neurology in improving neurological health care services in Pakistan which has led to inclusion of neurological disorders in Punjab health card. He also announced scholarships and funding grants for the junior’s neurologists and faculty members to conduct research, present scientific papers internationally. He also advised neurologists to apply for stoke units grants, fellowships opportunities by fulfilling criteria of Pakistan Society of Neurology. He told that ten Neurologists came from America, Canada, Britain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Singapore and Dubai informed about the modern ways of diagnosis and treatment methods of various diseases through hands-on workshop.

Due to the increasing number of patients, special attention is needed in this field. The Pakistan Neurology Society also has funds for its promotion. We will encourage the arrival of young doctors in the Neurology sector. For this purpose, free scholarships along with funded course work will be provided in different cities to encourage the new doctors. He also thanked the Organizing Committee Dr. Qamar-un-Nisa, Dr. Mohammad Amir Umer, Dr. Sarfaraz, Dr. Sumaira Rafat, Dr. Muneer, Dr. Saira, and Dr. Shehnaz Shah, for holding a successful conference.

The Chairperson Neurology Conference and the Head Professor of Neurology Department, Dow University of Health Sciences, Prof. Naila Naeem Shehbaz said that emphasized the need for improvement in neurological services within province of Sindh like creating posts for neurologists at district health level, provision of medicine for neurological disorders in all basic health unit and setting up of stroke unit in at least existing hospitals of Sindh. we held fifteen workshops in Pakistan from March, 18 to March, 19 which were attended by 18,150 doctors. We are doing more to fulfill the needs of society and we hope that this conference will help the doctors from different cities of Pakistan in diagnosis and treatment of diseases based on modern and advanced methods. We unite to expand the Neurological Sector across the country. She told that next year, we will work to establish a stroke unit in Pakistan.

At the end, Vice Chancellor of Dow University, Prof. Mohammad Saeed Quraishy distributed certificates and Shields to the participants.
