Zara Noor Abbas Says Pakistani Cinema Must Earn Audience Support
Zara Noor Abbas says local filmmakers must deliver compelling films and build audience confidence in Pakistan’s movie industry
Zara Noor Abbas discusses the need for stronger Pakistani cinema and audience support.
KARACHI: Actor Zara Noor Abbas has called on audiences to support Pakistan’s entertainment industry, but said filmmakers must first deliver films that give people a reason to visit cinemas.
Speaking to The Express Tribune about her upcoming film Sheroes, Abbas rejected the idea that audiences should watch Pakistani movies simply because they are locally produced.
“People want entertainment,” the actor said, stressing that filmmakers must understand what attracts audiences to cinemas.
Abbas said people often head to theatres after spending time on activities such as dining out. She believes filmmakers must create compelling stories that make audiences choose cinema as their next destination.
The actor pointed to the Spider-Man franchise as an example of how filmmakers can build a strong connection with audiences. She noted that fans regularly turn up for new releases because the franchise has developed a loyal following.
According to Abbas, Pakistan’s film industry needs to create similar franchises that give audiences confidence in local cinema.
She also acknowledged that even major franchises can produce films with flaws. However, established franchises give viewers a clear idea of what they can expect from a movie.
Abbas said Pakistani filmmakers must also convince audiences that their cinema tickets are worth the price, which can range from Rs1,500 to Rs2,000.
Turning to Sheroes, Abbas encouraged audiences to give the film a chance. She said the production team had experimented with new ideas and worked with emerging filmmakers.
Sheroes is an anthology featuring three stories about women facing different circumstances.
Abbas stars in the action segment “Gear Up”, where she plays a police officer who specialises in bomb disposal. Kinza Hashmi leads the segment “Artist”, while Ushna Shah stars in “Punch.”
The film features three separate stories and marks a new addition to Pakistan’s growing cinema landscape. Abbas said audiences should watch the film and judge it for themselves.
