United States: The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have issued a warning about Iran’s efforts to interfere in U.S. elections.
In late June and early July, Iranian hackers sent unsolicited emails to people connected to President Biden’s campaign. These emails included stolen information from former President Trump’s campaign. So far, there’s no evidence that the recipients responded to these emails.
This cyber activity is part of Iran’s plan to create division and undermine trust in the electoral process. The FBI is actively tracking these threats and is in contact with the victims to gather more information.
As the November elections get closer, the FBI has noticed an increase in interference from foreign countries like Russia, Iran, and China. These countries are trying to exploit divisions in U.S. society.
The FBI and CISA encourage campaigns and election officials to report any suspicious activity. More resources to help protect against cyber threats can be found through CISA’s #PROTECT2024 initiative.
