Trump Orders Temporary Pause in Hormuz Escort Mission as Iran Talks Show Progress

US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary halt to the US-led naval escort mission in the Strait of Hormuz, citing significant diplomatic progress in negotiations with Iran and requests from Pakistan and other nations.

The decision comes amid ongoing tensions in the Gulf region, where the strategic waterway has been largely disrupted due to the conflict, blocking nearly 20 percent of global oil shipments and triggering a worldwide energy crisis. The escort mission was launched earlier this week to facilitate the safe passage of stranded commercial vessels and oil tankers through the volatile route.

In a statement, Trump said the pause would allow space for diplomatic efforts to finalize a potential agreement with Iran. He emphasized that while the blockade would remain in place, the suspension of escort operations was aimed at encouraging dialogue and de-escalation.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had earlier confirmed that the operation was initiated to secure maritime traffic and prevent further disruption to global energy supplies. US officials maintain that Iran must not be allowed to control navigation through the strait.

Following the announcement, global oil markets reacted swiftly, with crude prices falling below the $100 per barrel mark, reflecting cautious optimism over a possible easing of tensions.

The conflict, which began with military actions involving the United States and its allies, has significantly impacted regional stability and the global economy. The International Monetary Fund has warned that even if hostilities cease immediately, economic recovery could take several months.

Pakistan has been actively involved in mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that diplomatic engagement is ongoing, although no formal agreement has yet been reached.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that key military objectives have been achieved, including partial restoration of safe passage for commercial shipping. However, he cautioned that the situation remains sensitive, with the ceasefire holding but under close monitoring.

Meanwhile, regional tensions persist, with reports of missile and drone threats continuing in parts of the Gulf, including concerns raised by the United Arab Emirates. Authorities there have described recent incidents as a serious escalation, underscoring the fragile security environment.

The temporary pause in the escort mission signals a potential turning point in the crisis, though uncertainties remain over whether diplomatic efforts will lead to a lasting resolution.
