The Networks of CPUs saved thousands of lives: Prof. Jawaid Akbar Sial.
KARACHI – The Sindh Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (SICVD) inaugurated its 29th Chest Pain Unit (CPU) on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Bin Qasim Town, Karachi, as part of its commitment to expanding free-of-cost, life-saving cardiac emergency services across the province.
Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Mayor of Karachi, along with Professor Jawaid Akbar Sial, Executive Director of SICVD, and Mr. Salman Abdullah Murad, Deputy Mayor of Karachi, inaugurated the Chest Pain Unit. Officials of SICVD were also present on the occasion.
Speaking to the media, Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that his Chest Pain Unit is a gift from the Sindh Government to the people of Karachi. The Government of Sindh has always demonstrated a keen interest in improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that quality services reach every citizen. The expansion of such free-of-cost cardiac emergency units reflects our commitment to saving lives and strengthening public health delivery at the grassroots level.
Professor Jawaid Akbar Sial, Executive Director SICVD, highlighted the life-saving role of the CPU network and said that with the establishment of this 29th CPU, we are bringing world-class, 24/7 cardiac emergency services right to the doorstep of the people of Gulshan-e-Hadeed. All services are provided completely free of cost with the support of the Government of Sindh.
He further added that these units have treated over 1.7 million patients, including thousands who arrived during heart attacks. Immediate emergency care was provided, and once stabilized, patients were shifted to our main facilities for primary angioplasty. All of this is possible due to the generous support of the Government of Sindh, which shares our vision for accessible, high-quality healthcare for all.
The CPU at Gulshan-e-Hadeed is equipped with advanced diagnostic facilities, emergency care, and trained staff available round the clock to manage cardiac emergencies, particularly heart attacks. Patients requiring further intervention are immediately shifted to full-fledged SICVD centers for procedures like primary angioplasty.
SICVD’s Chest Pain Unit Program is internationally recognized for its innovative model of decentralized emergency care and has treated hundreds of thousands of patients across Sindh since its inception.
