Bangladesh: A Bangladeshi student leader named Shamim Ahmed was beaten to death at Jahangirnagar University in Dhaka. He was attacked on Wednesday night, likely as revenge for his role in countering protests against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Ahmed was a key member of the Awami League’s student wing.
After the beating, he was taken to Gonoshasthaya Hospital but sadly died from his injuries. This marks the second killing of an Awami League student leader this month; another leader, Abdullah Al Masud, was killed in Rajshahi just days earlier for similar reasons.
The violence comes after a major uprising against Hasina’s government, which faced accusations of detaining and killing political opponents. Over 450 people died during the unrest leading up to Hasina’s departure in early August, when she fled the country just before protesters stormed her palace.
Since Hasina left for India, many of her former ministers have been arrested, and her supporters have been removed from important positions in the government. Additionally, at least 25 journalists linked to her regime have been detained since the new interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammed Yunus, took over.
