KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday approved the bail request of Sahir Hassan, the son of a prominent actor, in a notable drug possession case, according to ARY News.
Hassan was taken into custody on February 22, 2025, in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority area, after authorities reportedly found illegal drugs in his possession.
A constitutional bench of the SHC reviewed his bail application, as he had remained in judicial custody for over two months. Acting Prosecutor General Munta?ir Mehdi and other legal representatives were present during the hearing.
Sahir Hassan’s lawyer told the court that 557 grams of cannabis were recovered from his client, and he had been under remand since his arrest.
The case, originally being heard by a larger bench, was later referred to the constitutional bench for appropriate jurisdiction.
After considering the arguments, the court granted bail to Hassan and directed him to submit surety bonds amounting to Rs1 million.
Speaking to the media after the hearing, Acting Prosecutor General Munta?ir Mehdi confirmed the bail approval and said the court also instructed the Chief Secretary to establish dedicated narcotics courts. Although legislation for these courts exists, their implementation is still pending. In the meantime, the SHC has proposed that current courts be empowered to handle such cases.
