The Punjab government has made it compulsory for motorcycles to obtain fitness certificates, a requirement previously limited to four-wheel vehicles. This change comes after amendments to the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965, as announced by Secretary Punjab Provincial Transport Authority (PPTA), Muhammad Hassan Ahsan.
He explained that the new regulation is aimed at bringing motorcycles under strict emission and mechanical standards to help combat worsening air quality in urban areas. Like cars, motorcycles will now need to pass regular fitness checks.
Ahsan also highlighted broader reforms in the transport sector to improve transparency and efficiency. These include eliminating handwritten challan slips and digitizing the route permit system, which will soon allow citizens to apply for permits online, reducing corruption and red tape.
He emphasized that enforcement against polluting motorcycles will begin soon and that transport route mapping across all districts has already been completed to support this regulatory push.
