The New Gwadar International Airport has officially commenced operations with the successful landing of its first commercial flight on Monday, as reported by ARY News.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-503 departed from Karachi at 9:50 AM, carrying 46 passengers, and landed at the new airport at 11:15 AM local time. The aircraft received a traditional water cannon salute upon arrival.
To celebrate the occasion, prominent dignitaries including Defence and Aviation Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti were present to welcome the inaugural flight.
A PIA spokesperson described the airport’s opening as a significant milestone, not only for Gwadar but for the entire country, fostering economic development, tourism, and international connectivity.
The launch of New Gwadar International Airport marks the beginning of a new chapter in regional and global air travel, unlocking vast opportunities for growth and collaboration.
It is noteworthy that the airport is a flagship project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), developed in partnership with China and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
Earlier in February 2024, flight operations were temporarily halted due to heavy rainfall that lasted for 16 hours. In response to safety concerns, the CAA suspended operations to ensure passenger and aircraft security.
