Met Gala 2027 to spotlight John Galliano in landmark fashion exhibition
The Metropolitan Museum of Art will examine the celebrated designer’s creative legacy alongside the controversies that shaped his career.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art announces John Galliano as the focus of the Met Gala 2027 exhibition.
Met Gala 2027 will honour British fashion designer John Galliano, with the Metropolitan Museum of Art announcing a major Costume Institute exhibition that explores both his groundbreaking creative work and the controversies that have defined his career. Titled “John Galliano: Horizons,” the exhibition will be the first comprehensive retrospective of the designer’s four-decade contribution to fashion.
The exhibition will feature garments, accessories, sketches, research books, toiles and archival materials from the Costume Institute’s extensive collection, offering visitors an in-depth look at Galliano’s creative journey.
Four decades of fashion innovation
The exhibition will trace Galliano’s career from his 1984 graduation collection in London through his influential tenures at Givenchy, Christian Dior and Maison Margiela, culminating with his acclaimed Spring/Summer 2024 collection.
According to the museum, the showcase will highlight Galliano’s distinctive blend of historical references, theatrical storytelling, technical craftsmanship and artistic experimentation that has shaped modern fashion.

Exhibition addresses controversy
Alongside his creative achievements, the exhibition will also examine the more controversial chapters of Galliano’s career, including his struggle with addiction and the racist and antisemitic incidents in 2010 and 2011 that led to legal consequences and his dismissal from Dior.
The exhibition aims to place these events within the broader historical, cultural and ethical context in which his work is now understood.
Three-part exhibition explores creative process
“John Galliano: Horizons” will be organised into three sections:
Bearings: A chronological overview of Galliano’s career, including his public controversies and personal struggles.
Horizons: An exploration of the designer’s inspirations, including history, geography, art, storytelling and performance.
Atlas of Transformation: A behind-the-scenes look at Galliano’s creative process through sketches, research materials, fittings and design development.
Curator Andrew Bolton said the exhibition examines fashion as “a form of cartography,” exploring how ideas evolve into garments while also considering how Galliano’s actions and changing cultural values have influenced public understanding of his work.
Fashion leaders praise exhibition
Max Hollein, the Metropolitan Museum’s Director and Chief Executive Officer, described Galliano as one of the most influential designers of the past 40 years, while Vogue Global Editorial Director Anna Wintour said there was “no one more deserving of an exhibition of this scale,” adding that Galliano’s career extends beyond a single controversial chapter.
The exhibition will open on 9 May 2027 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Fifth Avenue location in New York and will remain on display until 9 January 2028.
