RACCONIGI: The exhibition, located at the Chapel of San Rocco in Racconigi, will open this Saturday, April 6, and will be accessible on weekends until May 19.
In commemoration of the centenary of Franco Basaglia’s birth, a key figure in Italian psychiatric reform, artist Sara Masoero presents a moving installation at the Chapel of San Rocco in Racconigi, open to the public during weekends in April and May.
Entitled “La bellezza rivelata” (“The Revealed Beauty”), this exhibition, curated by Luisa Gastaldelli, sheds light on the forgotten stories of those who lived within the walls of the former psychiatric hospital of Racconigi, celebrating marginalized lives through the innovative use of macro photography and in-depth research in the structure’s archives. Mayor Valerio Oderda expresses pride in presenting this significant and thoughtful exhibition, which pays tribute to the victims of the former asylum and invites reflection on the history of psychiatric care in Italy.
The exhibition includes photographs of flowers, capturing minute details that represent a often overlooked microcosm, alongside the stories of 150 individuals who spent years in the institution. Historical documents, such as letters from family members seeking news, are displayed, testifying to the enduring humanity in difficult conditions.
Under the patronage of the Piedmont Region and the Municipalities of Racconigi and Cuneo, the installation will open on April 6, 2024, at 4:30 p.m., and will be accessible until May 19, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, with appointments available on Fridays (for appointments, contact 333.5293937). Admission is free.
