Karachi Administration Intensifies Action Against Illegal Parking and Unauthorized Bachat Bazaars

The Karachi administration has intensified efforts to tackle traffic congestion and related civic problems across the city.

Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has directed Deputy Commissioners, Town Municipal Administrations (TMAs), the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Traffic Police to coordinate action against illegal charged parking and unauthorized bachat bazaars.

The commissioner stressed that enforcement must produce lasting results. He also directed officials to prevent violations from returning after operations.

Action Against Illegal Parking Fees

Officials briefed the commissioner on ongoing operations against illegal charged parking. Authorities have identified 33 illegal charged parking sites across Karachi.

Operations have already eliminated illegal parking charges at 20 locations. During August and September, authorities registered 47 FIRs and arrested several individuals during the operations.

The locations cleared of illegal parking charges include areas around Khawaja Nizamuddin Park, Denso Hall Signal to Tower Lane, Napier Road and Burns Garden.

Other cleared locations include Lohani Building, Kotwal Building, Machhi Miani Market, Parkland Hospital, Glass Tower and PSO Petrol Pump. Authorities also took action around UBL Bank in Block 5 Clifton, Preedy Police Flats, Nabi Bux Police Station and Regal Chowk.

Naqvi directed officials to install clear “No Parking” signs wherever parking is prohibited.

He also ordered strict action against anyone collecting unauthorized parking fees at locations where parking is permitted.

The commissioner said citizens should have access to free parking wherever parking restrictions do not apply.

He also ordered measures to prevent double and triple parking. Officials will install “No Double Parking” signs and display applicable fines where required.

Tariq Road Parking Operation

Officials reported that complaints of illegal parking fee collection continue from several areas.

The complaints particularly concern the stretch between Amma Tower, Zaibunnisa Street and Abdullah Haroon Road. Naqvi ordered officials to monitor these locations again and take action against illegal fee collectors.

The commissioner also reviewed complaints about parking fee collection on Tariq Road.

He directed the Deputy Commissioner East and DIG Traffic to ensure free parking on Tariq Road. They must also act against people collecting unauthorized fees.

Officials decided to conduct an operation on Tariq Road after 8:00pm under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner.

Relevant police and traffic personnel will support the operation. Authorities will arrest individuals found collecting illegal parking fees.

Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso said officials had arrested around 15 to 16 people involved in illegal parking fee collection in District South.

He said similar action would take place on Tariq Road. The deputy commissioner will also inform citizens about the operation through the media.

Crackdown on Unauthorized Bachat Bazaars

The meeting also reviewed measures against unauthorized bachat bazaars.

Officials decided to shut down all illegal bazaars operating without authorization.

Authorities said these bazaars contribute to traffic congestion, sanitation problems and other civic issues.

Director Planning at the Commissioner Karachi Office Naseem Bhutto briefed the meeting on the situation.

He said officials had identified 15 unauthorized bachat bazaars in District Central. Authorities have already eliminated 11 of them.

Four other locations remain under surveillance because of complaints about their re-establishment.

Officials also reported 26 unauthorized bachat bazaars in the Korangi and Shah Faisal areas.

Deputy Commissioners briefed the meeting on ongoing operations. They said authorities had registered FIRs at some locations.

The commissioner directed relevant officers to complete the ongoing operations against unauthorized bachat bazaars within 10 days.

Deputy Commissioner Keamari Sattar Hakro said authorities had identified three unauthorized bachat bazaars in District Keamari. Officials have eliminated all three.

Rules Apply to Existing Bachat Bazaars

The meeting also reviewed the bachat bazaar near Aladdin Park on Rashid Minhas Road.

Officials noted that even an established or historical bazaar must follow approved rules and conditions.

Naqvi directed authorities to ensure that any permitted bazaar stays within its approved limits and complies with all applicable conditions.
