KARACHI – Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Accountability Shahzad Akbar says first reference against granting of sugar subsidy to the tune of 29 billion rupees unlawfully in last five years has been sent to National Accountability Bureau.
Speaking at a news conference in Islamabad on Wednesday, he said the government has prepared an action matrix in light of the Sugar Inquiry Commission’s recommendations for punitive actions.
He said NAB will look into the matter of subsidy, while Federal Bureau of Revenue will act in matters relating to evasion of sales tax and other things.
The SAPM said matters pertaining to corporate fraud have been sent to Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan and Federal Investigation Agency.
Shahzad Akbar said weaknesses, in the regulatory framework, especially in FBR, SECP, Cane Commissioner, and Competition Commission of Pakistan, have been identified with the provision of guidelines to fill these gaps before the beginning of next crushing season.
