KARACHI, April 23, 2026: Earth Day was observed in the historic Saddar area of Karachi through a joint initiative of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and the Dawoodi Bohra community, focusing on promoting environmental awareness, sustainable waste management, and the importance of collective civic responsibility.

The event highlighted the role of citizens, including shopkeepers, vendors, traders, and residents, in maintaining urban cleanliness and adopting responsible waste disposal practices as part of daily life. Children from the Bohra community actively participated, presenting creative messages and environmental activities aimed at encouraging awareness from a young age.

Managing Director of SSWMB Tariq Ali Nizamani said environmental protection cannot be achieved by institutions alone and requires active participation from every segment of society. He stressed that sustainable waste management begins at the household and community level and can only succeed through consistent behavioural change.

Community representative Ali Asghar appreciated the initiative, stating that the Bohra community strongly believes in environmental stewardship and civic responsibility. He said such programmes help strengthen grassroots awareness and encourage younger generations to adopt environmentally responsible lifestyles.

SSWMB Consultant Social Mobilization Kashif Siddiqui emphasized that real environmental transformation depends on community ownership. He noted that citizen engagement helps reduce waste generation and supports long-term urban sustainability goals.

Other speakers, including Assistant Commissioner Saddar Ghazanfar Perdakh, environmental advocate Naeem Qureshi, and waste management expert Aamir Hazari, also stressed the importance of coordination between government institutions and communities to improve environmental outcomes in urban areas.

The event concluded with a symbolic plantation drive led by Tariq Ali Nizamani in Saddar, where saplings were planted to promote urban greenery and reinforce the message that meaningful environmental protection begins with small, consistent actions.
