Disco Bakery Flyover: Karachi Project Faces Questions Over K-IV Pipeline Plan

Officials raise concerns that the planned K-IV water pipeline and ongoing infrastructure works could complicate construction of the proposed flyover before work begins.

KARACHI: Disco Bakery Flyover has triggered debate before construction begins, as officials warn that the planned K-IV water pipeline, ongoing transport projects and roadside encroachments could disrupt the project and create long-term traffic problems.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation will begin construction on August 14 and complete the flyover within 90 days. However, officials and residents have questioned the decision to start construction before completing the K-IV pipeline project.

Officials working on the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP) say engineers plan to install a 96-inch K-IV (R-2) water pipeline along the same corridor where the city intends to build the flyover.

Officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said engineers will lay the pipeline from Abul Hassan Isphahani Road to Disco Bakery and then extend it to Gulshan Chowrangi. The project requires workers to excavate the road six to eight feet deep and clear additional space on both sides, affecting traffic across the entire corridor.

They warned that building the flyover before completing the pipeline could create serious engineering and operational challenges. Future excavation could weaken the flyover’s foundations, increase construction costs and cause prolonged disruption for commuters.

Officials also pointed out that several transport and infrastructure projects already occupy nearby roads, while encroachments continue to reduce traffic flow along the route.

Sources said officials from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the Karachi Water Corporation will meet soon to review the project’s feasibility, resolve technical concerns and decide how to coordinate both projects before construction starts.

The meeting could determine whether the city proceeds with the current construction schedule or revises the timeline to complete the K-IV pipeline first.
