Pakistan honours its martyrs and armed forces on the 61st Defence and Martyrs’ Day.
ISLAMABAD, September 6, 2026: Pakistan is observing its 61st Defence and Martyrs’ Day, paying tribute to the soldiers, airmen and sailors who served the country during the 1965 war.
The day began with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad and 21-gun salutes in the provincial capitals. Meanwhile, a change of guards ceremony was held at the Quaid-i-Azam’s mausoleum in Karachi.
A contingent of 64 male and eight female cadets from the Pakistan Air Force Academy took part in the ceremony. Asghar Khan assumed guard duties at the mausoleum.
Defence Day is observed every September 6 to commemorate Pakistan’s military history and the sacrifices associated with the 1965 India-Pakistan war.
Defence Day Recalls the 1965 War
The 1965 war began after Indian forces crossed the international border on September 6. Fighting continued for 17 days before a ceasefire took effect later that month.
Pakistan and India subsequently moved towards negotiations. The two countries signed the Tashkent Agreement on January 10, 1966, under Soviet auspices.
The conflict left a lasting impact on relations between the two neighbours. Moreover, the Kashmir dispute remained unresolved and continued to shape regional tensions.
Defence Day therefore serves as both a military commemoration and a reminder of national unity. Ceremonies across Pakistan honour those who served and sacrificed during the conflict.
Prime Minister Pays Tribute to Martyrs
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the martyrs, veterans and families of Pakistan’s armed forces.
In his Defence Day message, the prime minister described September 6 as a significant chapter in the country’s history. He highlighted the unity and determination shown by the nation and armed forces during the 1965 war.
Shehbaz also praised the armed forces’ response during last year’s Marka-i-Haq conflict. He credited the military leadership with delivering what he described as a strong response to India.
Furthermore, the prime minister said Pakistan’s current challenges require greater national unity.
He identified ignorance, poverty and underdevelopment as major challenges facing the country. According to Shehbaz, national strength depends not only on defence capabilities but also on economic stability, political stability and public welfare.
Pakistan Highlights Regional Security Role
The prime minister also highlighted Pakistan’s role in regional and international security.
Shehbaz said Pakistan seeks peace, stability and prosperity in the region. At the same time, he stressed that the country would protect its sovereignty and national interests.
He described Pakistan as a responsible state that contributes to collective security beyond its borders.
The prime minister also referred to the Makkah Defence Alliance as an example of Pakistan’s growing regional security partnerships.
Meanwhile, he called for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
President Zardari Remembers National Heroes
President Asif Ali Zardari also paid tribute to the martyrs and veterans of Pakistan’s armed forces.

In his message, he said September 6 holds an important place in the country’s national history. He praised the courage and determination displayed during the 1965 war.
Zardari said the sacrifices of the martyrs would continue to guide future generations. He also highlighted the bond between the armed forces and the people of Pakistan.
The president linked the spirit of September 6 with last year’s Marka-i-Haq and Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.
According to Zardari, the episode demonstrated the professionalism and preparedness of Pakistan’s armed forces. He also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace, dialogue and mutual respect.
However, he stressed that sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security would remain non-negotiable.
Ishaq Dar Links Regional Peace to Kashmir
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also issued a Defence Day message.
Dar paid tribute to military personnel, law enforcement agencies and their families. He highlighted their sacrifices in defending Pakistan and combating terrorism.
He also referred to Marka-i-Haq and Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, saying they reflected the same spirit of courage and professionalism associated with earlier generations.
At the diplomatic level, Dar stressed Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, dialogue and cooperation.
However, he said lasting regional peace requires a resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Pakistan, he added, would continue its political, diplomatic and moral support for the Kashmiri people.
Armed Forces Renew Defence Pledge
The military leadership also marked the occasion with a message issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu and General Syed Aamer Raza paid tribute to Pakistan’s Shuhada and Ghazis.
The military leadership also expressed gratitude to the families of martyrs.
According to ISPR, September 6 remains a symbol of national unity, courage and resolve. The statement said generations of Pakistani defenders had made sacrifices across the battlefields, skies and seas.
The Armed Forces reaffirmed their preparedness to defend Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
At the same time, the military leadership reiterated Pakistan’s stated commitment to peace and peaceful coexistence.
The statement added that a desire for peace should not be mistaken for weakness. According to ISPR, any aggression against Pakistan would receive a decisive response.
PAF Remembers Its Wartime Legacy
The Defence Day commemorations also continued at the Quaid’s mausoleum in Karachi.
Air Vice Marshal Hasan Faisal addressed the change of guards ceremony and recalled the role of Pakistan’s armed forces in the country’s military history.
He highlighted the PAF’s contribution during the 1965 and 1971 wars. He also referred to last year’s Marka-i-Haq conflict.
Faisal said the PAF remains focused on protecting Pakistan’s aerial borders. He also highlighted developments in advanced technologies, including space, cyber capabilities, artificial intelligence and information technology.
Defence Day and the Spirit of National Unity
Defence Day remains an important national occasion in Pakistan.
Every year, the country remembers the military personnel who served during the 1965 war. Families of martyrs, veterans and serving personnel also remain central to the commemorations.
