BYD SHARK 6 Earns Five-Star Euro NCAP Safety Rating

BYD SHARK 6 hybrid pick-up recognised with a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

BYD SHARK: The SHARK 6 earns a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating for its crash protection and safety technology.

BYD’s SHARK 6 DMO pick-up has earned the maximum five-star safety rating in the latest round of tests by independent vehicle safety organisation Euro NCAP. The result strengthens the vehicle’s credentials as a practical work pick-up and a versatile option for active lifestyles.

The rating highlights the SHARK 6’s performance in crash protection and driver assistance. According to Euro NCAP’s assessment, a five-star rating reflects excellent overall crash protection and advanced crash-avoidance technology.

The official report builds on an assessment conducted by Australasian safety organisation ANCAP last year. Euro NCAP also carried out additional evaluations to assess the vehicle’s safety performance.

Strong Protection for Adults and Children

The BYD SHARK 6 achieved an 82% score for adult occupant protection and an 86% score for child occupant protection.

Euro NCAP highlighted the vehicle’s performance in frontal-offset, full-width rigid-barrier and side-barrier tests. It also recognised the protection provided to child dummies representing six- and ten-year-old occupants during a side-impact test.

Furthermore, the SHARK 6 features a child-presence detection system. This technology can warn occupants when it detects that a child may have been left inside the vehicle.

Safety Technology Supports Vulnerable Road Users

The SHARK 6 also performed well in tests assessing protection for vulnerable road users, including cyclists and motorcyclists.

Its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system demonstrated effective responses to cyclists and good responses to motorcyclists. As a result, the pick-up achieved a 74% score in the Vulnerable Road Users category.

In the Safety Assist category, the vehicle scored 87%. Euro NCAP recognised its emergency braking response to other vehicles, lane-departure support and speed-assistance technology.

The speed-assistance system can automatically set the vehicle’s speed limiter based on detected local speed limits. Together, these features are designed to help drivers respond to potential hazards and maintain safer driving practices.

BYD Highlights Engineering and Innovation

Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, said the result demonstrated the company’s engineering and electronics capabilities.

She noted that BYD’s 120,000 research and development engineers work to develop technologies that improve people’s lives. According to Li, the SHARK 6 combines these innovations in a pick-up designed for work, family use and off-road activities.

Li also highlighted the vehicle’s electric driving capability, saying it can travel up to 90 kilometres on electric power alone. She described the SHARK as an important addition to BYD’s global range of new-energy vehicles.

Hybrid Powertrain Combines Performance and Efficiency

The BYD SHARK 6 uses the company’s Super Hybrid DMO powertrain, which combines two electric motors with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

The system delivers a combined maximum output of 436 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. Consequently, the pick-up can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

Its 29.5 kWh Blade Battery uses Cell-to-Chassis technology within the ladder-frame platform. In addition, the petrol engine and electric powertrain provide a claimed combined range of up to 800 kilometres with a full battery and a full fuel tank.

The vehicle is designed for customers who want to complete many everyday journeys using electric power. At the same time, its hybrid system supports longer trips and demanding work requirements.

Comfort and Technology for Everyday Use

The double-cab SHARK 6 seats five people and offers a range of comfort and connectivity features. These include vegan-leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system.

The cabin also includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and a head-up display. Meanwhile, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen provides navigation, voice assistance, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other features include remote cabin heating and cooling through the BYD app, a 50-watt wireless smartphone charger and exterior puddle lights. The vehicle also offers front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, keyless entry and keyless start.

Additionally, Vehicle-to-Load technology allows users to power compatible devices through two onboard power sockets. This feature can support equipment used during work, travel and outdoor activities.

The five-star Euro NCAP rating adds to the SHARK 6’s safety credentials, while its hybrid powertrain and technology package aim to combine utility, performance and everyday comfort.
