Bangladesh: A court in Bangladesh has opened a murder investigation into former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six top officials. This follows the killing of a man by police during recent protests in Dhaka. Hasina, 76, fled to India last week as her 15-year rule ended amid widespread unrest.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Court has instructed police to proceed with the investigation. The case was filed by lawyer Mamun Mia, representing a private citizen. Besides Hasina, the investigation also names former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, and four senior police officers, including former inspector general Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.
Police have resumed patrols in Dhaka after a weeklong strike caused by the unrest. The new interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, is working to restore order, with several high-profile officials having stepped down.
In India, nearly a dozen Bangladeshis have been arrested trying to cross the border to escape the violence, with hundreds more waiting for permission to enter.
